PSP Comic Store, we hardly knew ye. No really, we hardly knew ye -- which is probably why Sony is warning PSP owners that its comic book portal is shutting down after October 30th. Come Hallowe'en, we'll lose the option to download the necessary app or buy additional titles. Any currently owned comics will be available to download again until mid-January, but readers will be on their own to preserve existing libraries after that. Outside of Japan, that creates significant problems for literary PlayStation fans: while PS Vita owners in Sony's home country will get a Manga store and reader in October, there's no equivalent crutch for other countries (or any PSP owners) at this stage. The console maker is non-committal and says there's nothing it can discuss "at the moment," which to us is a hint that we shouldn't plan our reading hours around a PSP or PS Vita in the near future.

Even though tempered-glass shower doors are supposed to break into small pieces ? to prevent injuries from larger, sharper pieces of glass ? they can break in bigger shards.
That is what happened to Larry Kucharik,?who was injured while cleaning up the shattered glass from his shower door.
?I just tapped the top of it and a chunk of it came down and hit my ankle,? said Kucharik, whose ankle is still scarred. ?It started bleeding, and there was a lot of blood all over the floor.?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports more than 60 complaints of shower doors shattering for no reason ? just suddenly exploding, causing lacerations and bleeding.?People reported needing stitches and even surgery.
Mark Meshulam, a glass and window consultant, reviewed the reports.
?These are the types of injuries and situations that I would expect to see when something goes wrong with shower doors,? he says.
He says a microscopic imperfection during the manufacturing process can grow and migrate, weakening the glass until it suddenly shatters.?It can even shatter without it being touched.
?I would say treat the doors gingerly,? Meshulam warns. ?Do not bang them.?Don?t allow children to hang on the towel bars.?
He also says look for chips near brackets, the towel bar and along the edges. Also, make sure the door only moves the way it is supposed to and is not loose on the track or hinges.
In Larry Kucharik?s case, the manufacturer replaced his shower door at no cost.
This has also been a problem at hotels.?Meshulam says one reportedly had 50 doors shatter. He would like to see protective film on shower doors to catch breaking glass.

Comcast will eliminate about 1,000 jobs in Northern California, including more than 300 in the East Bay and more than 300 in the South Bay, as it closes call centers in Livermore, Morgan Hill and Sacramento.
The telecommunications giant blamed the cuts on California's high costs.
"We have concluded that the cost of doing business makes operations in California expensive and very difficult," said company spokesman Andrew Johnson.
Comcast, the dominant provider of cable television services in the Bay Area, will transfer its call center work to existing similar operations in Portland, Seattle and Denver.
The job cuts, a fresh blow for a state that struggles with a jobless rate of 10.6 percent, will
take effect in stages. It's expected that some jobs will be eliminated on Nov. 30 and more in late December, Livermore city officials said.
"The cost of doing business in California is a well-known problem across the country and among business owners in the United States," said Scott Anderson, chief economist with San Francisco-based Bank of the West. "With the fiscal problems in California, these expenses will likely get higher. Tax rates may rise in California."
In a high-profile exit from California, Copart earlier this year relocated its headquarters to Dallas, abandoning its former head offices in Fairfield.
"Some businesses, such as high-tech companies, are interested in other factors that may outweigh the expenses
in California," Anderson said. "But for other businesses, it's hard to justify adding employees in California on a cost basis alone."
Comcast's pending exit dismayed Morgan Hill officials.
"We are sorry to see Comcast leave," said Edith Ramirez, Morgan Hill's city economic development director. "Comcast has been a good corporate citizen. They have been very involved with our schools and community groups."
The relocation of the call centers out of California is unfortunate but understandable, said Livermore Mayor John Marchand.
"The economic reality is you can put a call center anywhere in the world," Marchand said. "From the Midwest to the Middle East, they can be located anywhere."
The high cost of housing in the Golden State has helped undermine the state's business climate and ability to compete for jobs against other states, said Christopher Thornberg, principal economist with Beacon Economics.
"The cost of housing in California is obnoxious, especially in places like the Bay Area," Thornberg said. "We worry about taxes and business regulations. But I would argue that the problems really boil down to the crazy housing policies we have in this state."
Thornberg pointed to permit fees for new subdivisions that can add $70,000 or more to the cost of each new home. Neighbors are often skeptical or hostile about a new residential development. Political leaders can raise objections throughout the planning process, he said.
Despite their disappointment about the job cuts, Livermore officials noted that a big new retail center will go a long way to offset the job losses from the Comcast closure.
"There will be 2,000 new jobs created at the Livermore outlet malls," said Troy Brown, Livermore's assistant city manager. "We are excited about the employment opportunities that remain in Livermore."
Even after the job cuts, Comcast will retain 5,500 workers in Northern California, Johnson said. The company's Northern California regional headquarters will remain in Livermore.
Comcast officials said the shutdown of the call centers won't degrade the quality and level of customer service for Comcast subscribers.
The cable company also said that it is shifting to a new structure whereby call centers will specialize in particular customer needs, rather than geography. These include billing, sales, repair or retention.
"While this transition will result in our closing three call centers in California, the end result will be better customer service for our California customers," Johnson said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Probation officials openly worried about actor Johnny Lewis' mental health and his danger to others in recent months, and this week their worst fears came true.
The man who died a violent death on "Sons of Anarchy" three years ago apparently beat and strangled his landlady and attacked neighbors before falling or leaping to his own death in neighborhood near Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon.
They were the final violent acts of a man who in the previous 10 months had been repeatedly arrested, sent to counseling and had left jail only five days before his demise.
Court records and his attorney detailed attempts to help Lewis but not in time to help 81-year-old Catherine Davis, who neighbors reported screaming inside a home near the outskirts of Los Angeles' Griffith Park. The home had been ransacked, glass was shattered and a dead cat was also found inside, and Lewis' body was found in the driveway.
Lewis' cause of death is pending toxicology results, Coroner's investigative division Lt. Fred Corral said Thursday evening. Davis died from blunt head trauma and manual strangulation, he said.
The deaths came four months after a probation officer expressed grave concerns about Lewis' mental health, writing that he was "very concerned for the well-being of not only the community but that of the defendant."
Court records detail Lewis' descent from January 2012, when he attacked two men and hit them in the head with a bottle, through August, when he acted as his own attorney and pleaded no contest to felony assault.
By that point he had been arrested three times for incidents ranging from trying to break into an occupied home in Santa Monica, Calif., to resisting arrest. He had been sent to treatment programs that specialized in drug and alcohol addiction as well as mental illness.
A May 17 probation report states that "the defendant suffers from some form of chemical dependency, mental health issue and a lack of permanent housing. Given this, (Lewis) will continue to be a threat to any community he may reside."
Another probation officer had written two months earlier, "Obviously defendant's behavior is out of control and needs counseling afforded by a professional."
Lewis remained on supervised probation at the time of his death.
Lewis' attorney Jonathan Mandel said the actor had serious mental issues that seemed to surface fairly recently. He said Lewis' parents and others had tried desperately to help him.
"Johnny Lewis had a lot of problems, a lot of mental problems," Mandel said by phone Thursday. "I recommended treatment for him but he declined it."
He continued, saying: "I give a lot of credit to his parents. They were really strong in trying to help him out. They really went to bat for him, but I guess they just couldn't do enough."
Lewis' career spanned more than a decade, mainly in small roles. He played Ricky in the 2007 movie "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator ? Requiem" and was Dennis "Chili" Childress for two seasons on TV's "The O.C." He also appeared in episodes of such popular television shows as "Boston Public," ''Judging Amy," ''Malcolm in the Middle" and "Drake & Josh."
He was on "Sons of Anarchy" in 2008 and 2009 before his character was killed off.
Kurt Sutter, the show's creator and executive producer, tweeted news of Lewis' death Thursday:
"It was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way," Sutter wrote. "I wish I could say that I was shocked by the events last night, but I was not. I am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path."

The Mars Rover has detected the first on-the-ground evidence of an ancient streambed. If there was water, could Mars have supported life? NBC's Tom Costello reports

A close look at pebble-filled layers of rock has convinced scientists that NASA's Curiosity rover is driving through a dried-up stream bed on Mars where water flowed vigorously billions of years ago. They say it's the kind of place that just might have supported life when the planet was young.
"This is a rock that was formed in the presence of water," Caltech's John Grotzinger, project scientist for the $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory mission, said today during a televised news conference at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
The evidence is in the shape, size and composition of the rocks that Curiosity came across at multiple sites during its landing on Aug. 5. Conglomerate rocks, consisting of pebbles cemented together within layers of sediment, were seen at three sites:
Goulburn, a bedrock formation that was exposed by the blast from Curiosity's descent.
Link, a rock outcrop that was seen once Curiosity headed out from the landing site.
Hottah, an uplifted slab of craggy rock that was given a visual inspection two weeks ago.
Hottah in particular showed clear evidence of rounded pebbles that were too big to be smoothed by the action of the wind. Some of the rocks are as big as golf balls. The best explanation for the gravelly pebbles was that they were eroded by the vigorous flow of water, said Curiosity science team member Rebecca Williams, a senior scientist at the Arizona-based Planetary Science Institute.
The Hottah slab, which measures 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters) thick, looks as if "somebody came along the surface of Mars with a jackhammer and lifted up a sidewalk that you might see in downtown LA, sort of like in a construction site," Grotzinger said.

This set of images compares the Link outcrop of rocks on Mars (left) with similar rocks seen on Earth (right). The image of Link, obtained by NASA's Curiosity rover, shows rounded gravel fragments, or clasts, up to a couple of inches (few centimeters) wide, within the rock outcrop. In accordance with the Mars mission's tradition, Link takes its name from a rock formation in Canada's Northwest Territories.
The evidence from the ground meshes well with the evidence from orbit indicating that Curiosity is near an 11-mile-wide (18-kilometer-wide) fan of material that may have washed down a channel in ancient times, when Mars was warmer and wetter, according to William Dietrich, a planetary scientist at the University of California at Berkeley.
"These stones ... are very, very revealing to us about the process," Dietrich said. Some previous research has suggested that water flowed on Mars only for brief periods, separated by long, cold, dry spells. That scenario might not have provided enough time for life to get a foothold on the Red Planet in ancient times. But Dietrich said the patterning of the channels within the fan suggested that water streamed through the area for well beyond a thousand-year time scale.
"We can step away from the idea that there was a single burst of water ... that built it all in a day," he told reporters.
Based on the size of the gravel seen by Curiosity, Dietrich estimated that the water moved at a speed of about 3 feet (1 meter) per second, at a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep.
"Plenty of papers have been written about channels on Mars with many different hypotheses about the flows in them," Dietrich said in a NASA news release. "This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it."

This image shows a dry streambed on an alluvial fan in Chile's Atacama Desert, revealing the typical patchy, heterogeneous mixture of grain sizes deposited together. On Mars, Curiosity has seen two rock outcrops close to its Bradbury Landing site that also record a mixture of sand and pebbles transported by water. Scientists say the mixture was probably deposited along an ancient streambed.
So far, the scientists' conclusions are based exclusively on visual observations by Curiosity's high-resolution Mastcam imager. Further imagery, along with chemical readings from other instruments on the rover, will likely be used to fill out the story of the ancient stream bed, Grotzinger said.
The main goal of Curiosity's two-year primary mission is to assess how habitable Mars was in ancient times. That's why mission managers chose 96-mile-wide (154-kilometer-wide) Gale Crater as Curiosity's landing site. It has that alluvial fan, which appears to issue forth from a channel that has now officially been designated Peace Vallis. It also has a 3-mile-high (5-kilometer-high) mountain, known as Aeolis Mons or Mount Sharp, which could preserve billions of years' worth of Mars' geological record.
Grotzinger noted that the three requirements for habitability typically listed by astrobiologists are the presence of liquid water, the availability of an energy source (such as sunlight) and the presence of carbon-based compounds that can be used as the building blocks of life.?
"Now we've got a hall pass for the water examination," Grotzinger joked.
Theoretically, a long-flowing stream could be a habitable environment. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though," Grotzinger said in NASA's news release. "We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."
Even if the rover's instruments detect the right kinds of carbon compounds, that would not serve as confirmation of ancient life on Mars. That would "have to wait for another mission," Grotzinger said. ?

Cannabis users have a greater chance of relapse to cannabis use when they experience certain withdrawal symptoms, according to research published Sep. 26 in the open access journal PLOS ONE led by David Allsop of the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC) at the University of New South Wales.
The authors tested a group of dependent cannabis users over a two week period of abstinence for impairment related to their withdrawal symptoms. Findings were correlated with the probability of relapse to cannabis use during the abstinence period, and the level of use one month later.
They found that in more dependent users, certain withdrawal symptoms, such as physical tension, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, mood swings and loss of appetite, were more strongly associated with relapse than other symptoms, such as hot flashes, fatigue, or night sweats. Participants with greater dependence before the abstinence attempt reported more severe impairment from the withdrawal. Participants with greater impairment from cannabis withdrawal consumed more cannabis during the month following the abstinence attempt.
If these results extend to treatment seeking cannabis users seeking treatment for withdrawal, the research may help improve counseling and treatment strategies for those looking for support.
"Tailoring treatments to target withdrawal symptoms contributing to functional impairment during a quit attempt may improve treatment outcomes" says Allsop.
